ripannanicolesmith: Since it’s already Sunday in Australia, Newsletter #

Since it’s already Sunday in Australia, Newsletter #2 is up on Patreon (link in bio). The title is “Camp as Method (Or, Why We Should Take Camp Seriously)”. I have included two unpublished essays (one I recently wrote and shares the newsletter title) and the other is a paper on Russ Meyer and aggressive women and feminism that I presented at Yale’s cinema and media studies graduate conference last year. I also have a three-page answer in my advice column to an undergraduate student who has no idea where or how to start applying for graduate studies. There is info and advice relevant to MA and PhD admissions. Thank you for reading! 💖 Image via

Visit my Patreon link in bio, subscribe, and I will consider opening up the comments on more posts. I have a bi-weekly newsletter which you can subscribe to and help pay for a young queer woman to write about queer issues. The next one comes out Sunday. I’m surprised that people ask me why I turn off the comments—you know there is a lot of misogyny and cruelty that I have to moderate, right? Against myself and other people. It’s exhausting. We are all mentally ill because our bodies cannot handle the stress threats that online bullying causes. Some people love it and thrive on it. But it takes a physical toll on most people. A lot of people leave shitty comments in an attempt to perform. Guess what—this is my venue and I make the rules and I will ban you and your tragic finstas. Trying to problematize something because you’re angry at something else in your life doesn’t count as activism. Go volunteer or something instead of showing us your embodied conservative ideology masquerading as progressive social politics because it’s suddenly en vogue. At the same time, I’m glad that people are so good at exposing themselves—it makes me see who I want to be friends with—who is going to accept me when I make mistakes? Whose evolved value system can I learn from in order to not be that conservative-underneath-a-liberal mask? (Which I have been because I was afraid to stray from the authoritarian neoliberal pack). The people who are going to positively influence me are definitely not the people bullying others online or making clear references to people. I can’t believe I’m 28 and writing about online bullying. It’s embarrassing to witness the public carceral punishment style from left-identifying people instead of anything resembling restorative justice

ripannanicolesmith: I also want to see a 1960s style

I also want to see a 1960s style experimental film rendered with this story or a Baz Luhrmann Romeo + Juliet (1996) contemporary pastiche-yet-political modern melodrama or a détourned Yorgos Lanthimos stylistically-adjacent director à la Greek Weird Wave...a Somali/diasporic Weird Wave style of filmmaking? There are innumerable possibilities

Kristel also has a Patreon which has been instrumental in funding her therapy and underpaid creative work which helps a lot of people. Prof. Kardashian says “fuck you, I’m wearing PVC” to the unspoken normalization of “professional” aka Old-White-Man-and-Woman-who-graduated-from-Oxbridge sartorial aesthetics while running you in circles with her knowledge on critical and social theory (I thought I fantasized this archetype but I’ve seen people break ground in this way). And it’s disproportionately the working classes who feel the pressure to wear “professional” outfits and to avoid “distasteful” clothing...until it’s appropriated by elites! To quote , have a good evening millennials

ripannanicolesmith: I have a promo code if you want

I have a promo code if you want to get 15% off orders of $35 or more with the amazing sex toy, jewelry, and other intimate apparel company : enter “ripannanicole” to get in on this. This is a sincere collaborative working relationship and not just me trying to recommend products that I don’t think are actually good. Some weekly highlights to recommend are the Clitoral Jolt Gel which is made with organic ingredients and not just a synthetic invention, as well as the bubblegum pink Tsk rod which is what I would like to picture Dionne and Cher (and Elle Woods) beating people with. 💅🏼
